Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
